Wednesday 2 December | Fully online | Organised by Educational Innovation, DVC (Education) Portfolio, The University of Sydney
In a year like no other, social isolation, increased workload, and learning and teaching online have impacted teachers and students everywhere, especially in higher education. It’s even more important now to make the large class feel small, to give students more tailored support and feedback, and to connect at the personal, human level.
In this context, the SRES 2020 Symposium has a focus on Person-alising Pandemic Pedagogy at Scale.
The SRES 2020 Symposium brings together educators from the University of Sydney, La Trobe University, and other institutions to share good practice around personalising student learning with SRES. Get inspired by simple things you can do through SRES to engage students, foster positive relationships, and provide timely personalised feedback and support using relevant data.
The problem SRES sets out to solve is foundational. I am investing quite a lot of time in student support and SRES enables me to do that more efficiently without compromising the quality of support I provide.
SRES, the Student Relationship Engagement System, is built by teachers, for teachers, with teachers. From grading and feedback to personalised web portals; from peer feedback and self reflection to getting to know your cohort; from fostering positive attendance patterns to supporting all students; from leveraging Canvas data to powerful personalised emails – SRES has something that every teacher can use.
I think it’s the first time that an online system, in particular a university one, aligns so exactly with what I was looking for, and has all the functions I was looking for out of the box…
Reach out, connect better, and save time. Find out how at the SRES 2020 Symposium. SRES is freely available to institutions other than Sydney, or can also be hosted for you by our partners Crystal Delta.
… when it’s easy to feel disillusioned in higher education, SRES and its popularity is a reassuring reminder that our teachers care.

Customised student portal MyBUSS6000 for students to own their data and interact. Roll Book view for tutors to access and view data to get to know students.
Does it work? USS Survey scores at the highest ever in 2020 despite the challenging teaching environment. Tutors love the customer-intimacy the data provides.[less]

SRES helps us track student participation, activity and their understanding (pre-work). It facilitates the process of finding errant students and reaching out to them.
Does it work? Teaching team find it easy to manage and review their students' work; I get email responses/explanations for lack of activity - sometimes these are very grateful.[less]

Enables me to personalize messaging to students based on attendance, in response to short weekly reflections on learning and it relation to their engagement/achievement. Also, it’s a quick and efficient way for demonstrators to enter student attendance and for myself as subject coordinator to quickly see missing data.
Does it work?Having students email back and say how helpful an email message was or how much they appreciated it was a real boost to me when bogged down in the craziness of week by week shifting online. On hearing about SRES in 2019, I could see one potential use, but now after actually using it I've realized just how many options there are to improve engagement with students.[less]

We have lots of students and lots of facilitators. SRES helps us to integrate our processes so that we can work as a team and provide relevant student feedback.
Does it work? For facilitators we meet and discuss this very regularly. We used to use Excel spreadsheets for data management, so we are aware of the alternative. Students give informal feedback (e.g. emails in our online world). In addition we surveyed students in S1.[less]

SRES allows me to provide personalised advice, information and support service referrals to students according to their individual academic and personal situation.
Does it work? Students receive information that is relevant to their needs and individual situation. A large number of students receive personalised information - it would be impossible to provide individualised information to this many students without something like SRES.[less]

Provide individualised feedback to a large cohort of 3rd year students and "easily" organise multiple demonstrators, lecturers and tutors without error.
Does it work? In response to my emails with data, many students replied to thank me for the helpful feedback. Emails I received from students who were unhappy with their grades using this system was much reduced.
Helped to streamline my workload so that I was able to easily line up the various team members without error. Helps to unclog my overflowing email box.[less]

Being a Faculty ED, it helps me introduce SRES to the different schools within the faculties. Most of the emphasis for this semester was given to creating attendance columns, but we've had a few requests to assist with using SRES for providing student feedback.
Does it work? Academics have responded with positive feedback in response to students receiving personalised feedback. SRES being used for attendance also received a positive feedback due to it's ease of use even though there were some apprehensions while creating the actual lists.[less]

We have efficiently linked individualised qualitative feedback to students (also provided using SRES) with tailored recommendations for strategies to continue to improve performance. These recommendations are provided between clinical simulation sessions, and between clinical simulation and external clinical placement.
Does it work? Students accessed and actively interacted with additional support materials. The process to both identify needs and then tailor advice and support to so many students was very efficient for both clinical simulation facilitators and academic staff.[less]

We use it extensively for feedback, marking, welfare checks, attendance etc. Recently, we have linked Canvas marking to SRES - it has provided a more streamlined way of marking.
Does it work? This was pilot tested in another small scale course - with positive feedback from students in terms of the transparency and substantial levels of qualitative feedback. This has also helped tutors transpose their cognitive load. It has become streamlined and from a quality assurance perspective ensures consistency in the quality of feedback provided.[less]

SRES allows us to centralise, through a student dashboard, reporting of assessment and practice task feedback, completion of course and task requirements, as well as personalised information about progress and learning support. It also allows us to quickly identify and follow up with students who are not engaging.
Does it work? Students and teachers appreciate having access to all online feedback, real-time updates on the completion of weekly learning activities and progress reporting all in one place. Students are quick to reach out to let us know if there are any perceived discrepancies in their dashboard display.[less]

In a blended learning environment, students no longer have the tangible take-aways of traditional learning environments, SRES allows my students to capture their key learning reflections throughout the semester and then consolidate this into a walk away 'MKTG5001 toolkit' for their use in the future. It also allows my teaching team to connect in a 'human' way especially in one-on-one interactions.
Does it work? Through student and educator canvas portals, my teaching team is able to access individual student reflections on any topic making one-on-one interactions 'human' and effective. With 95% of students saying the reflections helped support their learning, including this element in the 'MKTG5001 toolkit' has been enthusiastically received as they can carry this with them into their future.[less]

It helped me target messages to those who needed to hear them and was an easy way to get feedback from the students. Simply putting the data about my students into one place was helpful in prompting me to think about what they needed.
Does it work? The data that showed students were opening the emails was hugely helpful. The informal feedback was positive.[less]

SRES helped facilitate assessment requirements on Canvas, for staff and students. Students worked in small groups to design an online learning activity; SRES enabled faculty to grade the assessment, students to peer assess other groups learning activities, and for students to also peer assess the contributions of their own group members.
Does it work? SRES has simplified what could have been a very complicated process in collecting feedback. It has enabled the students to receive timely and personalised feedback from multiple sources, which will assist their professional development.[less]

SRES digitises the marking rubric for practical exams and oral case defence exams, allowing detailed, personalised and rapid feedback for students. I have also used SRES to track completion of the COVID questionnaire completion prior to students attending face-to-face practical classes.
Does it work? My staff and I have found the SRES format easy to use (big buttons, text boxes for comments, students listed according to the schedule) and efficient to collate information and return marks. Students have given feedback both informally and formally (via indirect comments in the USS) that they like getting detailed feedback on their assessments in a timely manner.[less]

While I have used SRES for a variety of units, this year I employed it in my role as Honours Director in the School of Education and Social Work. Through engaging with the EI support team (particularly Nick Randal), we designed new features to support the work of honours students, supervisors and examiners, and create a 360 degree management tool. The new features allow complex communications between myself and any target group, all within one 'sheet'.
Does it work? Managing communications, documents and feedback between around 50 students, 50 supervisors and 70 examiners is no small task. Each of these groups require different things at different times, and the product is complex. The process that we've collectively developed is still in development, but this use of SRES has provided far more than just administrative support- it's created transparency and an audit trail for the submission, examination and reporting of honours theses.[less]

To help students prepare for the final essay in WRIT1001, a feedback centre (Canvas portal) was created to bring together students’ own comments on weekly surveys and marker comments on recent assignments. Weekly portals improved student responses to online activities throughout the semester. Rubrics focused and streamlined marker comments on assignments. SRES helped combine portals and rubrics to create a formative learning moment.
Does it work? Yes! Using rubrics to capture marker comments and embedding those comments in the feedback centre saved staff time and contextualised feedback at a formative moment in the unit. Students read their feedback while thinking about a future task and responded by planning strategies for improved writing.[less]

SRES has helped me deliver personalised help to students in a large cohort, and to tailor my support on the basis of rubric scores. As an added benefit, it has meant that I can alleviate some of the burden on my casual tutors to provide extensive comments, and instead mark to a rubric that will generate more substantive comments later on.
Does it work? I know that it has reduced the marking load of my tutors. I also know that I've received tons of positive emails from students who were grateful for the extra support and information.[less]
